Industrial process
Traditionally, three manufacturing processes are most representative of the way to produce polypropylene. Hydrocarbon slurry or suspension is used in the reactor as an inert hydrocarbon diluent for the liquid in order to transfer the propylene to the catalyst, remove heat from the system, inactivate/remove the catalyst, and dissolve the atactic polymer. The range of grades that can be produced is very limited. (The technique is no longer in use).
Bulk (or bulk slurry) : Use liquid propene instead of liquid inert hydrocarbon diluents. The polymer is insoluble in diluents but rides on liquid propylene. The resulting polymer is withdrawn and any unreacted monomers are flash-removed.
Gas phase: use of gaseous propylene in contact with a solid catalyst, resulting in a fluidized bed medium.
